    • Letter from Bert J Rawlins: July 23, 1999 Julia Rawlins 411 South Main St. Lewiston, UT Dear Julia: I am running hard to get this to you in time for the reunion. I am sorry I will not be abl e to make it this year. I had several surprises come in the way of work. There is a semina r at BYU and another one in St. Louis that I have been assigned to attend. My daughter arriv es home on leave from the Marine Corp on the Saturday of the reunion. She will be here onl y a short period, and I will only get to see her for a limited time. The seminars interfer e with most of days she will be here. Unfortunately, I have no choice about the seminars. T hey were simply spring on me, and messed up my whole schedule for the end of July and first p art of August. I have pretty well finished the research on James Rawlins' other wives, and I feel I have i t pretty well figured out. He married Jane Sharp in Harrison County, Indiana March 19, 1816 . He was sealed to her on the 16th of May, 1856. On the 14th of April, 856, just a month ea rlier, James was sealed to Jane's sister Elizabeth, who was deceased. Jane stood proxy for h er deceased sister. On this same day, 14 April, 1856, Harriet Wheat was sealed to her late husband, James Wheat , for time and all eternity. A month later on the 16th of May, 1856, she was married to Jame s Rawlins for time only. I have enclosed three TIB cards reflecting Harriet (Hunt) Wheat's e ndowment and her marriage to James Rawlins. The original entry when she was endowed in the E ndowment House gives her name as Harriet Rawlins. Since the Endowment took place on the sam e day as her marriage to James Rawlins 16 May, 1856, she was listed as Harriet Rawlins. In p reparing the TIB Card for this endowment event, they gave her name as Harriet Hunt with (Rawl ins) listed next to her name. Hunt was typed on the card because that was her maiden name an d was derived from her father's name as she gave it in the record. TIB cards were ordered b y the woman's maiden name for easier searching of the file. When she was married to James Ra wlins, the original record gives her name as Harriet Hunt. This will reflect their associati on with each other. Rachel Hammit married Joseph Keller first, and he died in 1855. She was sealed to him for ti me and eternity, 1 July, 1855 in the President's Office. She was married to James Rawlins i n the Endowment House 26 April, 1866. I gather that Rachel died sometime between 1870 and 18 80. She was in the 1870 census with James Rawlins, but not the 1880 Census. There are no other wives for James Rawlins. As far as I can tell, he married both of these w omen for time only. They were both sealed to their first husband for time and eternity. Yo u will see how this works on the enclosed family group sheets. I did do some work on the Van Dyke line as well, but as I explained on the phone, the agent i n New Jersey could not meet our deadlines, so I am back to looking for another agent to wor k on this line in New Jersey. I am in hopes that the will of Nicholas VanDyke can be found . If it is I believe we will get the answer we need on whether Nicholas' daughter Elizabet h is the one who married our James Frost. I will pursue this further later this summer, onc e I can find a suitable agent. In all I spent a couple of days research these things. Send me $200, and let's leave the res t in the account for the agent when he does his work. I will look forward to hearing how th e reunion went. Sincerely /Bert/ Bert J Rawlins 12098 South 1800 West Riverton, UT 84065
