After the Prophet was shot at Carthage Jail, Ezekiel said "This is the end" and he left the Mormon Church. He remained in Iowa while his wife and her three daughters and son James went on to Utah with a band of pioneers. lived in Council Bluffs, Iowa From Ancestral File (TM), data as of 2 January 1996.
Ezekiel and family (with other Mormons) moved west to Pottawattamie county, Iowa, where they stopped for a while. Then Charlotte and most of the kids left and moved on to Utah but Ezekiel and at least one son chose to stay and Ezekiel remarried.
